Top Twenty Songs That Will Make You Cry

Eric Clapton ~ Tears in Heaven
Sarah Mclaughlan
Songs that will bring a tear to your eye
Music can be healing, music can be inspiring and music can be releasing. Songs that strike an emotional chord are very personal. Here is a list of songs I prefer to listen too when locked up in my room and in dire need of music therapy.
1."I'm so lonesome I could cry" Hank Williams ~ "I've never seen a night so long" "The moon just went behind the clouds to hide it's face and cry". Hank Williams wears his heart on his sleeve and the pain in his voice. "He's lost his will to live" "I'm so lonesome I could cry"
2."Tears in Heaven" Eric Clapton ~ An outpouring of strength in the face of excruciating pain. "Would you know my name, if I saw you in Heaven" "Will it be the same, if I saw you in Heaven" "Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in Heaven" A song about the loss of a child and the enormous task of having to move on.
3."I don't like Monday's" Boomtown Rats ~ A song written about a real-life event of a sixteen year old girl in California who went on a shooting spree and showed no remorse. The senseless act of violence and it's toll on innocence. "sweet sixteen ain't that peachy keen" "I wanna shoot the whole day down". "The lesson today is how to die".
4."I will always remember you" Sarah Mclachlan ~ II will remember you, will you remember me?" "Don't let your life pass you by" clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose". An emotional plea disguised with an Angel's voice. A tearful question most of us have wondered and imagined in a moment of despair.
5."Cat's in the Cradle" Harry Chapin ~ A song about how brief our time with our children really is. Inevitable pain caused by an unintentional sequence of events. "When he hung up the phone, it occurred to me, my boy grew up to be just like me"
6."Everybody Hurts" REM ~ Raw, REM seems to find that painful space in all of us. "when your day is long, and the night, the night is yours alone" "and you're sure you've had enough of this life, hang on". A plea to hold on and to understand that everyone hurts. "If you think you've had too much of this life".
7."With or Without You" U2 ~ This song live is amazing. "See the storm set in your eyes" "I'll wait for you" "slide of hand and twist of fate" "on a bed of nails, she makes me wait". Intricate, poetry in voice. "and you give yourself away". Passionate and wild.
8."Hallelujah" Jeff Buckley ~ Recently surfacing again. Jeff Buckley's rendition of this song is poignant and haunting. You feel the intensity of the broken spirit. A cry for redemption.
9."Landslide" Stevie Nicks ~ "Can I sail through the changing ocean tides, can I handle the seasons of my life?" "I don't know". Feeling the overwhelming loss when you lose sight of who you are and where you're going.
10."Yesterday" The Beatles ~ One of the most beautiful ballads the Beatles had ever recorded. "Yesterday, my troubles seemed so far way." "Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play" A sensitive wondering of what could have been and questioning why it couldn't be that way.
11."No More Drama" Mary J. Blige ~ From the real life of Mary J. Blige who suffered from depression and paranoia during a low point in her life that nearly destroyed her. "Broken heart again, another lesson learned, know your friends, or you will get burned" "No more pain, no more pain, no more drama in my life". A testament to how strong the human spirit can be. "Only God knows where the story ends for me"
12."Time after Time" Cyndi Lauper ~ "Caught up in circles, confusion is nothing new". Beautifully timeless. The sweetness that is true love. "if you fall, I will catch you. I will be waiting" "Time after Time"
13."Mad World" Gary Jules ~ From the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack. "Their tears are filling up their glasses, no expression, no expression" "The dreams of dieing are the best I've ever had" Agonizing and moving.
14."Angels" Robbie Williams ~ Sadness laced with hope. A search for unconditional love. "She won't forsake me" "I'm loving Angels instead" "She offers me protection, a lot of love and affection. Weather I'm right or wrong" "She breathes flesh to my bones"
15."Under the Bridge" Red Hot Chili Peppers ~ Triumphant but sad all at the same time. A true account of racing against the odds. Loneliness reflected. A bittersweet love story between man and his city of angels.
16."Mahogany" Diana Ross ~ "Do you know where you're going to, do you like the things that life's been showing you?" A song about looking back at what should have been.
17."Nothing Compares 2 U" Sinead O'Connor ~ "It's been 7 hours and 15 days, since you took your love away". Brilliant and heart wrenching. Honest to the core. Sinead's version sends shivers everytime.
18."Bohemian Rhapsody" Queen ~ In my opinion, one of the best songs of all time. "Mama, I just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he's dead". Epic and remorseful regret.
19. "Voices Carry" Aimee Mann ~ "In the dark, I like to try to read his mind. But I'm afraid of the things I might find". Paralyzing fear and an emotional portrayal of torment.
20. "One" U2 ~ "Did I disappoint you, leave a bad taste in your mouth", "you act like you never had love and you want me to go without". A song about forgiveness and letting go.

I LOVED this list and pretty much agree with every song...I would've also added Breathe ME by Sia...they played it during the closing scene of the series finale of Six Feet Under! I cried like a baby during that. = - /
A couple of The Fray's songs gets me a little sad. Good list though.
Great list - Nick Drake's 'Black Eyed Dog' would be at home on this page. He's a very underrated Jeff buckley-esqu singer.
Hello Summer10,
This is a pretty good list. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah never fails to give me the chills. With or Without You is also and awesomely sad song! What do you think about Brian McKnight's Back at One?
Nice list...but you're not seriously going to break down and cry when you hear these are you? Some are sad, that's a given, but unless you are in a state of emotional distress when listening to a song...what would make you cry? Nice hub though.
Check out my most recent post and some of my other hubs by clicking my pictures. I would love some comments.
I don't know all the songs on your list, but I agree with several. "Tears from Heaven" would certainly be at the top, and "I don't like Mondays" and "Yesterday" gotta be right up there too. For me, "Operator" by Jim Croce would be high on the list. (I gotta ask: You don't really cry at "Bohemian Rhapsody" do you?
There was a country song a few years back, where the chorus went:
"If I should die before I wake...feed Jake...he's been a good dog...my best friend...right to the end," and something else. It always gets me when they kill the dog. Unfortunately, the rest of the song was horribly bad!
Thanks for a great hub, Summer!
Eric Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven" is my most favorite song. My sister has listened to it as she can identify as she also lost her son 4 years ago. Music can indeed be healing.
Thumbs up to your hub!
This is definently a great list. I love slow jam and especially ones that make you feel.
Thanks A Lot!
don't take the girl by tim mcgraw makes me cry...

Some of these are sad indeed, but all are a distant second to "I Still Can't Say Goodbye" by Chet Atkins. Please youtube this and be ready to cry.
Martina McBride- Independence Day is another great one.. As is Johnny Cash- Hurt. Good list though.

It's beautiful! Also Peter Gabriel - Book of Love ... I think just about any girl would love to have that playing at her wedding :)
Concrete angel by marina mcbride !! tear jerker fo sure
heven 9/11 remix by dj Sammy so so sad. it is about a girl who lost her dad in 9/11. she sits by her bed and talks/prays to her dad in heaven. i lost my aunt and used to pray to her every night so i can relate. i cry every time it is a MUST LISTEN TO SONG
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley I think is the best version of a brilliant Leonard Cohen song - enjoyed your hub.
I referenced you in my hub about Jeff Buckley and so thought I would see what else you have on this list... and I was not disappointed! "I don't like Mondays" was my favorite song when I worked in a rock and roll radio station's traffic department, and I had no idea what it meant. You have created a poignant list.
This is a pretty good list. I personally have a hard time holding back the waterworks whenever I hear "My Immortal" by Evanescence. That is a sad song!!!

The song "Goodbye" by Audio Adrenaline always makes me tear up. But mostly because I heard it when my sister was leaving for college.
If "Under the Bridge" makes you cry, you're disturbed.
Seriously. No, I mean it. You have mental issues that should be addressed immediately.
If I played that song in the car and you cried, I would be dropping you off at the hospital as quickly as possible. Sheesh.
Great list. But a song that always makes me cry is watch over you by alter bridge. It's the saddest sweetest song ever. :(
They should add concrete angel by martina mcbride
I suggest "In the living years" by Mike and the Mechanics
This song carries strong emotions of regret over mistakes made in the past.
Another Eric Clapton song is "River of tears" This song has a long intro of music that sets the mood for this somber song of pain and suffering over lost love
If 'WILL YOU BE THERE' by Michael Jackson and HEAVEN by simply red doesnt make you cry, i dont know what else will
Bobby Darin-if i was a carpenter.Don Maclean-castles in the air.Please listen to these songs,allways make me blub.
This is like two years old, but oh well... Fiction by Avenged Sevenfold is a very sad song, the lyrics are from their drummers suicide note. Also, Much Like Falling by Fly Leaf which is also about suicide.

I agree with alot of these songs. I would have to add one by The Escape Club. "I'll be there" Its a song for every one who has lost a loved one. The corus verse is....
"Don't be afraid, oh my love
i'll be watching you from above

to be with you
Because im on your side

WHISKEY LULLABYE- Brad Paisley I CANT BELIEVE ITS NOT ON THIS LIST! AMAZING SONG!
Third Day- Follow Me There
I think the top should be All I Ask of You from The Phantom of the Opera
Quick note to those of you who seem surprised by what songs make other people cry... sorrow and grief are very personal. You don't know what that person has been through that makes the song affect them that way. For instance, someone who lost a son in the war might cry every time they hear "Star Spangled Banner." I wouldn't, but I can understand where they would. Someone whose best friend committed suicide might cry when listening to their friend's favorite song, no matter what it was. Catch my drift?
I don't see a lot of genres portrayed here, so let me add a few that need representation. If you don't like 'em, you don't like 'em. I like 'em and that's why I'm sharing.

Well, Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" is the only song on this list that might make me cry, frankly. But to each his own, I suppose.
Also: Gary Jules didn't write "Mad World." I don't know whether you knew that or not, but the description didn't give any credit to Tears for Fears, so I wasn't sure. Just thought I'd let you know. :)

As a 28 year old bloke I am happy to say I have never heard a 'song' that has made me cry... however that being said I don't know whether its the sheer power of the music or something but some of the John Williams tracks from the star wars albums really make me choke up, namely DUEL OF THE FATES and THE IMPERIAL MARCH to name but two, if you have the time find them on youtube and turn the volume up!
